On June 4th, 2011, the late Steve Prescott MBE undertook one of his legendary extreme challenges, the End to Extreme. This remarkable feat involved cycling from Lands End to John O’Groats while climbing the Three National Peaks: Snowdon, Scafell Pike, and Ben Nevis.
For anyone, this was an incredible challenge, but for Prescott—who was battling terminal cancer and took a break from chemotherapy to participate—it was a testament to his strength, determination, and unwavering spirit. He became a beacon of hope for cancer survivors, showcasing the power of resilience in the face of adversity.
Now, in a tribute to Prescott's legacy, former St. Helens RLFC player and SPF Ambassador Steve Hall, along with nine dedicated teammates, will revisit this challenge in the Rapridgrid Three National Peaks Cycle Challenge 2025. On Friday, September 12th, they will begin by climbing Snowdon at 5:00 AM, followed by cycling to and climbing Scafell Pike, and then on to Ben Nevis to conquer all three UK mountains.
The ambitious challenge will take place over three days, covering 450 miles of cycling alongside the three peaks—a feat that was completed in four days in 2011.
Steve Hall remarked, “The memory of the 2011 challenge will live with me forever, as will the inspiration from Precky. When I reflect on what Steve achieved while battling terminal cancer, it sets him apart from anyone else. He led from the front, and despite his body's struggles, he maintained an athlete’s demeanor toward everyone.”
Hall emphasized the importance of continuing Prescott's legacy, stating, “As we all get older, taking on this challenge in just three days will push our bodies and minds to their limits. Steve Prescott will be with us every step of the way, and we will hear his customary ‘sprint finish’ half a mile from the end of each day.”
Martin Blondel, on behalf of the SPF, added, “We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the team, cyclists, supporters, and sponsors for their incredible backing. Their support means so much to our beneficiaries, The Christie Charity and the Rugby League Benevolent Fund (Rugby League Cares). This challenge is extreme, and while we have hotels booked at strategic locations, the likelihood of sleep is remote. With 12 hours in the saddle and four to five hours of climbing each day, when they hit the pillow, it will be time to do it all over again. Steve’s spirit and the generosity of our donors will inspire us to conquer Ben Nevis and complete this challenge within 72 hours.”
**Challenge Itinerary:**
- Day One: Climb Snowdon and cycle 161 miles.
- Day Two: Cycle 34 miles, climb Scafell Pike, followed by cycling another 125 miles.
- Day Three: Cycle 117 miles and conclude with a climb of Ben Nevis.
