Phil is out of office this weekend as he provides mechanic support for The Steve Prescott Foundation Three Peaks Challenge 2025 - Cycling 450 miles, Climbing the UKs 3 highest mountains all in just 3 days.
This event is inspired by the late great Steve Prescott MBE, who took on one of his legendary extreme challenges - the End to Extreme. This was to cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats via climbing the Three National Peaks, Snowdon, Scarfell Pike and Ben Nevis. An incredible challenge for any person, but for someone who had terminal cancer and took a break from chemotherapy to take part, is simply mind blowing. The strength and determination the great man had and his willingness to overcome adversity and give Cancer survivors that beacon of hope, is amazing.
Money will also be used to support The Christie Charity Rugby League Benevolent Fund, in Steve's name. You only need to look at what he achieved whilst himself suffering from terminal cancer to understand why there is so much enthusiasm in keeping both his name and legacy thriving. Nine of Steve's former St Helens Rugby League team mates are taking part in this epic challenge which involves cycling to and climbing the UKs 3 highest mountains. That's a huge 450 miles of cycling on top of the climbs.
Heading the challenge is SPF Ambassador Steve Hall who said:
“The memory of the 2011 challenge will live with me forever, the inspiration from Precky will also live with me forever! When I look back at what Steve achieved whilst he had terminal cancer, that separates him from anyone else, he lead from the front and even though his body was fighting against the terrible disease, his attitude and the way he looked and treated people, to the outside world he looked like an athlete!
It is so important we do our bit to continue his legacy, we are all getting older and to tackle this challenge in a mere three days is going to push all our bodies and minds to the limit.
Steve Prescott will be at our side all the way and half a mile from the end of the day we will hear him shout out his customary “sprint finish”.
Phil is hoping of course that his services won't be required, but having been involved in a great number of such events over the years, is equipped and ready to offer immediate roadside pitstop assistance. The charity is also close to his heart, knowing several friends and relatives who have accessed and are under the care of Christies while going through Cancer.
Martin Blondel on behalf of the SPF said “We would like to thank all the team, cyclists, support and sponsors for their incredible support. It means so much to our beneficiaries The Christie Charity and Rugby League Benevolent Fund (Rugby League Cares) this is going to be extreme. We have hotels booked in strategic locations but the likelihood of any sleep is remote. 12 hours in the saddle and four to five hours climbing with logistics of food and repairs will make sure when they hit the pillow it will be time for them to do it again. Steve will inspire them along with the generosity of donations. All support is hugely appreciated and will get them to conquer Ben Nevis and complete the challenge within 72 hours.
